When I was in the 11th grade, Mrs Waters caught me talking in study hall; so her punishment was I had to read a book (any book) and report to her when I finished it. No book report, just the honor system.
I choose by chance "The Red Badge of courage" by Stephen Crane. This book ignited my interest in Civil War history and I started reading anything about the Civil War that I could find and still do enjoy Civil War history.
When my mother passed away, Mrs Waters attended the visitation, since my mother taught mostly the 5th grade for 32 years at Red Oak, and they had become friends.
Upon seeing Mrs Waters I pulled her off to the side and told her how her making me read that book had changed my life. I told her that it made me become an avid reader which helped me in later years graduate from college. I told her that I wanted her to know that she DID make a difference in my life as a teacher. We both teared up on that unforgettable occasion!!
