My name is Phoebe Spradley and I am the 2024 recipient of the Red Oak High School Alumni Scholarship. I live in Nashville, NC and will be graduating from Faith Christian School this upcoming May. This fall I will be attending North Carolina State University to pursue a degree in Mathematics Education. As a teacher, I hope to allow kids to see all that they are capable of being and help them grow into their best self. Throughout high school I was active in dance, cheerleading, National Honor Society, Student Government Association, Environmental Club, Students for Life, Art Electives, and Praise Team. As a member of First Baptist Church in Scotland Neck, North Carolina, I attended youth group, served in the children's ministry, and assisted with Sunday morning worship. I was also involved in my community with Operation Christmas Child, Sleep in Heavenly Peace, Vacation Bible School, Peacemakers, and many other service projects, totaling to about 160 hours of community service. Academics is also very important to me as I took AP and College Dual Enrollment classes and carried a weighted GPA of 4.65. As a Senior, I was recognized as the Distinguished Young Woman of Nashville and competed in the state scholarship program. I have also received the Timothy Award and Patriot Award and have been recognized as a Junior Marshall and NCA All American Cheerleader.
I would like to give a big thanks to the Red Oak Alumni for their gracious gift as it will help me continue my education at NC State. I am truly grateful for this recognition and the wonderful community of Red Oak North Carolina.

I am from Nashville, NC, and I will be graduating from Rocky Mount Academy in May of 2023. This fall, I will be attending North Carolina State University, where I will major in mechanical engineering. During high school, I was a captain of the varsity football and basketball teams at Rocky Mount Academy. I received the MVP award for football my junior year, and I was named to the NCISAA 2A All-State team in 2021. I began running track this spring, and will be competing in the state championship meet on May 20th. While sports took up most of my time, I was still an active member in clubs at RMA. I helped found the Rocky Mount Academy fishing club, where other members and I competed in the Bassmaster High School Tournament Trail. I was also a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. We met at least once a month to listen to a sermon or talk about spreading God's word in our school. I am an active member at Nashville Methodist Church and in my community. I have been a part of the Appalachia Service Project and Team 252, which are both mission trips that focus on helping those in need while also spreading the word of God. I am currently employed at Benvenue Country Club, where I work most weekdays after school during the spring and summer. While extracurricular activities have played a large role in my high school career, education was always my number one priority. I am a member of the National Honor Society, I received Straight A Honors all four years of high school, I received the Headmaster's Award all four years of high school, I received the Turner W. Battle Scholarship in 2021, and I was a Senior Academic Marshal.
I would like to thank the Red Oak Alumni Association for giving me this incredible opportunity and selecting me as a recipient for the Red Oak Alumni Association Scholarship. I am incredibly blessed to have been chosen and had a wonderful time meeting all of the alumni at the class reunion in April.

My name is Katie Moss, and I am the daughter of Ashley & Tom Moss, and the granddaughter of Craig Reid, a graduate of Red Oak High School. I have the honor of being named the 2019 recipient of the Red Oak Alumni Scholarship.
I graduated on June 1st from Rocky Mount High School, where I finished at the top of my class in the International Baccalaureate program. During my high school career, I balanced my demanding course load with my athletic schedule and a work and volunteer schedule. I was a three sport athlete, playing the # 2 seed on the Varsity Tennis Team, swam on state qualifying relay teams for all 4 years, and was a starting forward on the Varsity soccer team. I was named Female Athlete of the Year my junior and senior years, and the Female Scholar Athlete of the Year my senior year. I also played travel soccer in Knightdale and Greenville.
When I wasn’t playing sports, I was active as an acolyte and in the youth group at my church, the Church of the Good Shepherd, in Rocky Mount, and also volunteered in various community activities. My favorite volunteer activity was my flower project, where for the past 13 months, I have delivered fresh arrangements every Monday to the Danny Talbott Cancer Center at Nash UNC Health Care. Those flowers have been a special reminder to me of my Granddaddy Reid.
My grandfather (Jame Craig Reid) and I shared a very special bond. He will always hold a special place in my heart. We shared a love of sports, dogs, and being outdoors. Not to mention, we both had a notorious sweet tooth for Hershey’s Kisses. I suppose I still do thanks to him. My favorite memories with him always pictured us sitting outdoors on his small farm in Salem. It was on his porch where together we would sit, sharing Hershey’s chocolate, jokes, and stories. He frequently discussed his time at Red Oak High School and how he walked to school each day. Being the jokester that he was, my grandad even tried out for the cheerleading team on a dare, and he made the team. Through my grandaddy, I discovered the deep ties I had to the Red Oak High School community. My great great aunt Elizabeth Griffin “Lib” Reges even taught at the high school for 26 years.
As the time grows closer for me to transition to the next phase of my life, his presence remains with me in my journey. I plan to continue my academic career at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill where I hope to explore the nursing program. This nationally ranked nursing program will not only fulfill my academic interests, but also satisfies my desire to help others in a way that is personal to me. I am excited to explore the school of nursing because of the STEM related courses and links to the medical field. But more importantly, as I learned from my grandad and my flower project in memory of him, I am excited to explore a potential career path that will allow me to continue to exhibit my passion for helping others. In addition, I welcome the challenge and rigor of the courses and high intensity component of being a nurse. Yet, I know that no matter what path I will choose to pursue at Chapel Hill, my grandfather is walking with me every step of the way. His heart always had a soft spot for the color Carolina blue, just as I will always have a special tie to the Red Oak High School Alumni community.

Hello! My name is Anna Shaye Thompson, daughter of Chad and Heather Thompson, and I had the honor of being awarded the 2018 Red Oak Alumni Association Scholarship at the 100th reunion in April. I live in Red Oak and will be graduating from Nash Central High in June.
During my high school career, I have balanced my time between academics, athletics, and community service. I will graduate as a North Carolina Scholar with a 4.58 weighted gpa. I have been the President of my school’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and a member of the Varsity Athletics Honors Association and National Dance Honor Society. I also played varsity soccer for 4 years, 3 years as kicker on the varsity football team (as the only girl on the team), 2 years on the varsity basketball team, and 1 year on the swim team. Even with my busy schedule, serving others is something for which I am very passionate. I have been a member of the Debu-ette Club, which is a women’s community service club, and completed the second highest number of community service hours among the graduating seniors. The two community service activities I have participated in that mean the most to me are collecting can tabs to take to the Ronald McDonald House in Greenville and going on mission trips with my church.
My family has strong ties to Red Oak High School. I, along with my mother (Heather Reges Thompson), sister (Brooke Thompson), and aunt (Kristie Reges Elder), all attended Red Oak Elementary, formerly Red Oak High School. I have grown up hearing stories about the “original” Red Oak High School, with its strong tradition of academics, sports, and the close-knit family atmosphere from my maternal grandparents (Roger Reges and Claudette Deans Reges) who graduated from Red Oak High School in 1961. All of my maternal great-grandparents, Claude Deans, Murveree Fisher Deans, RU Reges, and Elizabeth (Lib) Griffin Reges, also are among my extended family who had the honor of graduating from Red Oak High School. My family members not only attended the high school, but my grandmother and great-grandmother also taught there for numerous years, with my great-grandmother living right across the street from the school for many years.
I plan on furthering my education at Charleston Southern University, where I will major in Early Childhood Education, as well as play on the soccer team. Upon graduation, I look forward to returning to Red Oak and giving back to the community which has provided me with so much during my life. Again, I would like to thank the Red Oak Alumni Association for this prestigious scholarship. I am thankful for your support and prayers as I continue my educational journey and I will try to do my best to make Red Oak proud.

I also have numerous great aunts and uncles who graduated from Red Oak High School. Some of which are Stanley Moore, Molly Moore Deans, Sandra Murray Richardson, Kensey Murray and Lensey Murray.
I plan on graduating from Northern Nash in the Spring and continuing my studies at Edgecombe Community College in the Fall. I will be majoring in Radiology. After 2 years, I would like to transfer to either East Carolina University or the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I am honored and truly grateful to be the recipient of this scholarship and these funds will greatly help me further my future education. Red Oak is a special community and it is an honor to represent my community with this scholarship.

I am Emma Price Hughes and I was awarded the Annual Red Oak High School Alumni Association Scholarship on Friday night, April 17, 2015, at the Rocky Mount Shrine Club. It was the ninety-seventh year Reunion!!
I am senior at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh where I am a member of the National Honor Society, a tutor, a retreat leader, a member of the Spiritual Life Leadership Council and the Principal’s Leadership Conference. I played AAU basketball for four years and was a member of the Cardinal Gibbons girls’ basketball team. Since age nine I was a swim team member and have been a lifeguard for the past two years. Among my art awards is first place in the State for Math Design competition. On May 8th I will exhibit at an art show in Raleigh. I have always wanted to be a teacher of young children. I will begin my formal preparation this fall in the School of Education at NC State.
I am very interested in history and genealogy. Last year I served as State History Chairman for the Children of the American Revolution. CAR is a patriotic youth organization that was founded in 1895. I belong to the Joel Lane CAR Society of Raleigh. I am particularly interested in our State project which supports the Cherokee Indian School in Cherokee, NC. The school teaches the original Cherokee language to its students since the language and culture are being lost with the passing away of the aging Cherokee population.
My parents are Michael and Susannah Hughes. My grandmother, Dr. Diane Price Fleming of Red Oak and Louisburg, is a Red Oak High School graduate and suggested that I apply for this scholarship. My great uncle, Jack Price, is a past president of the Red Oak Alumni Association and my cousin, Pat Radford, is also a past president of the Association. My grandmother was chief cheerleader for the Red Oak Rebels for several years and was a cheerleader a total of five years. My maternal great-grandparents were the late Jack and Christine Price of Red Oak.
In my remarks to the Association Friday night I stated, “I have visited family and friends in Red Oak many times and know it to be a special place. I will attend NC State in the fall and study to become an elementary school teacher. I am honored to be recognized by you and will do my best to be worthy of your generosity and trust. Thank you.”

Hello my name is Kristen Turner. I am from Winston-Salem, NC and I am
the 2013 recipient of the Red Oak High School Alumni Association Scholarship. I graduated from West Forsyth High School. In the fall, I will be attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. My plan is to major in Biology.
During my years in high school I was an active member of my school,
church, and community. At West Forsyth I was the President of the Anchor
club (girls’ service club), a participant of the Youth and Government program, Junior Class Council member, National Honor Society and Science Honor Society member, Girls Lacrosse team Captain and All-Conference player. I am also an active member of Calvary Baptist Church as a small group leader and worship leader of our youth choir, Vertical Generation. I have had the privilege of going on numerous mission trips with Vertical Generation, including one this summer to Trinidad and Tobago. Being an active member of my community is a priority of
mine. As a weekly tutor of inner city children at the Martin Luther King Jr.
Recreation center I was able to invest one on one time with students with poor socioeconomic standings and few role models to encourage them to break the cycle of poverty. I also participated in various projects around the Winston-Salem area to be a helping hand such as working blood drives, landscaping at schools, and supply drives for those in need.
My grandmother, Judy Fisher Turner, is a 1965 graduate of Red Oak High. She informed me of the scholarship opportunity and I am thankful for her encouragement . I am also grateful to the Red Oak Alumni for their gracious gift and support as I journey to further my education.

_ My name is
Tucker Nero Bass and I am the recipient of the 2012 Red Oak High School Alumni
Scholarship. I am the grandson of Myrtle
and Ned Bass who both graduated from Red Oak High School in 1947. My grandmother also worked in the Red Oak
School system for 20 years. Red Oak
Baptist Church is where I serve as an active member in the choir, drama
productions, Audio Committee, Vacation Bible School and help with several
community service programs like Meals on Wheels. I am a graduate of Northern Nash High School
and will be attending Nash Community College this fall in the college transfer
program. My initial goal is to earn a
two year Associates Degree in the Arts.
The local college is a perfect choice for me as it will allow me to stay
connected to my home church and serve the community that I love.
My passion for photography, video and acting began in my own backyard, literally. As I spent many summers growing up in the town of Red Oak, I came to appreciate the beauty and nature around me. My neighbors and friends became the subject of my dialogs and when my parents gave me the camcorder, my fate was sealed. Art is my passion and I hope my gift will be used to help feed society’s ever increasing desire for knowledge and entertainment. I would like to continue performing in the theater while attending Nash Community College possibly through the Imperial Center in Rocky Mount.
After earning my two year degree, I plan to transfer to NC State and complete my Bachelor’s Degree with a concentration in Graphic Design. I would like to thank the scholarship committee for their time and effort in choosing me as the 2012 recipient of this generous scholarship. I appreciate your continued support and prayers for my bright future.

Hello my name is Amanda Griffin, from Red Oak NC, and I am the 2011 Red Oak High School Alumni Scholarship winner.
I am a graduate of Northern Nash High School and in the fall I will be attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where I plan on majoring in Biology.
While in high school, I was a four year letter winner in the following sports: volleyball, basketball, and soccer. I am also very active in my youth group at Red Oak Baptist Church through leadership roles and community service. Furthermore, I was also named Rocky Mount's Junior Miss for 2011 and went on to participate in the North Carolina Junior Miss Program.
I first became informed of the Red Oak High School Alumni Scholarship when I contacted my guidance counselor. I learned that I was eligible to apply for the scholarship because of my grandmother's, Doris Rose Griffin's, attendance at Red Oak High School in the 40's.
I would just like to once again thank the scholarship committee and the generous supporters who gave to the fund for allowing me to be the 2011 recipient.
